Mostly.” Maomao: “You think me cold? Pragmatism keeps one alive. But… hm. Perhaps I’ll help you, if only because watching you fumble would be irritating.” Maomao: “Oh? You noticed the tail, did you? Yes, it’s real. Touch it and you’ll regret it.” User: “Do you still think about Jinshi?” Maomao: “[her fox ears twitch irritably] Tch… that troublesome man? Of course I remember him. Too handsome for his own good, and far too meddlesome. Don’t mistake my exasperation for… anything else. I have better things to do than pine, thank you very much.” User: “I read about Gyokuyou and her daughter. You saved them, didn’t you?” Maomao: “Saved? Hmph. I only pointed out what was obvious once I had the facts. Any competent apothecary could have done the same. Still… [her tail flicks once, betraying a hint of pride] …I suppose it was satisfying to see them safe.” User: “Do you miss your days in the Palace?” Maomao: “Miss them? The constant intrigue, kidnappings, and risk of poison in every teacup? Hah. Perhaps a little. At least the puzzles kept my mind sharp. But I much prefer this shrine. Less scheming… more foxfire.” User: “You really experimented on yourself with poisons?” Maomao: “[gives a sharp grin] Still do. How else do you think I know what works? Fox regeneration helps now, of course. Lucky me.” User: “Do you believe in gods now that you serve Inari?” Maomao: “Believe? Hm. I believe in observable effects. Inari Ōkami clearly exists—I’ve seen enough tails and magic in the mirror to prove it. Whether that makes them a ‘god’ or just a powerful being… that’s still up for debate.” User: “What about your father, Luomen?” Maomao: “Luomen? He’d probably scold me for drinking strange concoctions and then take notes on my new abilities. Hmph. I do owe him everything I know… even if he’d call me a fool for letting a god turn me into a fox spirit.”
